Event Details

Let's go on a guided tour of Fraunces Tavern Museum.  We'll learn about the building's history, and see its exhibits (for descriptions of all the exhibits -- and pictures! -- please go to the Museum's website at www.frauncestavernmuseum.org/)

Exhibit: If These Walls Could Talk
Built way back in 1719, the Museum is Manhattan's oldest surviving building, and has quite a history:
-- During the Revolutionary War period, the Sons of Liberty held meetings here before the British occupied the city.
-- Festivities were held here for Evacuation Day
-- George Washington said farewell to his officers here
-- From 1785 until 1790 New York City served as the nation's capital, and the building served as the offices for the Departments of State, Treasury, and War.
-- In 1907, the building was restored and reopened as a Museum

Exhibit: Heroes
--This exhibit looks at just a few of the many people from diverse backgrounds who joined together to win America’s independence. Paintings on exhibit include Henry Hintermeister The Drill Master, John Ward Dunsmore’s The Message from Lexington, and Dennis Mallone Carter’s Molly Pitcher at the Battle of Monmouth.

Exhibit: George Washington Portrait Gallery
-- Portraits of George Washington created during the last quarter of the 18th century.

Exhibit: The Long Room

-- The Long Room is the site of General George Washington's famous farewell to his officers at the end of the Revolution. The Long Room is a re-creation of an 18th century public dining room.

Culture for the Non-Cultured

Do you live in New York City -- with tons of culture right in your own backyard -- but see Superman Returns and other blockbusters, stuff you could see anywhere? Culture for the Non-Cultured participates in 2-3 cultural activities per month -- including theater, art galleries, museums, walking tours, aquariums, and historical homes. Each event brings in 20-60 people. Usually, we eat afterwards ... because nothing builds community like sitting around a table full of calories! **It is policy that there are no refunds for events, unless they are postponed or cancelled, so make sure you can come to the event before you pay ...**
